From Rotax 912 F to 915 iS
I chose Rotax engines technologies to rebuild one of the personal flying devices – P01 at the One Man Helicopter project for Unreal Engine 4. Today I would like to introduce you to the preliminary results of this work. Example below shows matcap preview of engine variant 912 iS.

The base engine components represents the Rotax 912 F, 80 HP, 55.4 kg motor. However, with exchangeable components, we can fine-tune this engine through 912 S, 912 iS, 914 F, up to the 915 iS version with 141 HP and 84.6 kg.
- Reduction gears
This part of engine is currently under construction and experimental, this mean we will see how it goes and we decide. It’s universal and will fit all engines. The goal is to see how it works including animations and explosions in combustion chamber. Visible only when engine under inspection to save resources.
The complete and most complex 915 iS engine with all components consists of around 150,000 tris. No holes, threads, screws and most nuts to save geometry as much I could. But the most important shapes and details have been preserved. This time I had a chance to work with Chris Bill’s 3D reference Rotax engine not just images and also thanks to rich Rotax technical pdf library.
Before rigging and making animations the engine has to be fitted in to the frame considering all engine variants. Plans to apply new solutions for materials for greater efficiency. As a reminder, it will require the reconstruction of several existing helicopter parts. So you can expect more further changes soon.
